Wilderness Emergency Care

Training for emergencies

I design and teach courses that help people prepare for safe wilderness experiences and cope with emergencies in both wilderness and urban situations. The long courses (Wilderness First Responder and WEMT Upgrade) are designed mainly for people who have a duty to act, or are responsible for the safety of others: trip leaders and guides, ski patrollers, and rescue team members; and for people who do serious wilderness activities that take them far from medical help. The shorter courses, Wilderness First Aid and Basic WFA, teach what recreationists and leaders of short wilderness trips need to know, with a lot of hands-on skills and scenario practice packed into relatively few hours.

Private courses

If you have a group of people who need training and certification in any of my courses, I can come to your facility and teach the course. My rates are reasonable, and I offer discounts to volunteer-based, non-profit organizations. Just send me an e-mail and let me know what you need.

Learning to teach

I am the program author and instructor trainer for my Wilderness Emergency Care program, adopted by the National Association for Search and Rescue (www.nasar.org). So I can train and certify NASAR WFA and WFR/WEMTU instructors, and help develop local programs. The WEC program web site is www.wildernessemergencycare.org.
In our instructor courses, you will learn course and lesson planning, class management, administration,  evaluation, and testing. But you will spend most of our class time preparing and practicing lessons, then getting feedback from other participants. So you will learn by doing, and we learn from each other. Any questions? Send me an e-mail - just click on my e-mail address below.

Textbook

My textbook, Wilderness Emergency Care, shows you how to do wilderness emergency care skills, step by step, as well as explaining the topics. It is available from NASAR and Amazon. My Instructor Guide  helps instructors plan, organize, and teach the NASAR wilderness courses, or any other courses that focus on practical skills. It is freely available to NASAR instructors in a NASAR dropbox.
